if you can't change the homepage address manually in the 'internet options' box, i would wonder if there was a virus or malware installed in your system. you should run a complete virus scan (free one at http://www.avast.com or http://www.prevx.com ).

you should also make sure you have all security updates from microsoft installed ( http://update.microsoft.com ).

myabe just by updating to IE 7, you will be able to use the blank button.
